Why this text
The 1897 New Testament is an extensive Ainu document in Batchelor's historical romanization. Its title page attributes the translation from Greek to the Rev. John Batchelor; this edition does not invent a stronger account of authorship than the sources support. Because the spelling reflects an early analysis of Ainu phonology, forms such as chikoro and moshiri require linguistic re-analysis as ci=kor and mosir. Every verse therefore keeps the source text beside a reviewable phonemic re-transcription, parallel translations, and the corresponding page image.
